The Vastness of God: Fall Beach Lesson 2021
As I sat on the beach or balcony this beach trip, my eyes continually look at the horizon. As far as I could see was water. And more water! This is one of the repeated reminders I get when we are here: the vastness of the water is like the vastness of God.
At this stage of life, the older I get, the more I realize I don’t know…about life, ministry, relationships and so many things, but certainly about the Lord. I know now more than I ever have, yet I understand how very much I still don’t know. That is what keeps me coming back again and again to His Word. I can’t get enough.
I was shelling one day and had to hunt, walk out into the shallow water, and dig down with my net to find most of the shells.
But then, once in a while, a keeper of a shell just bounced up on the shore. Though the majority had to be hunted down, what a pleasant surprise when one just lay on the shore, asking me to pick it up! Each shell I find, however I find it, is a treasure to me.
This is like God’s truths. Most of what I learn, I must intentionally read, study and meditate on Scripture. But once in a while, a life principle just falls in my lap. Perhaps it comes from something a fellow believer shares, a quote from a Christian author, or a verse planted into my reading plan the very day I needed it most. Those surprise treasures are added to the ones I dig for to add to my awareness of the vastness of Who He is.
Paul talks about the mystery of Christ coming for not just for the Jews, but for all people when He says in Ephesians 3:4-5, “By reading this you are able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ. This was not made known to people in other generations as it is now revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.”
In Colossians 1:25 Paul says, “God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
The mystery of Christ in us is something we will never fully understand this side of heaven, yet He can be known through His Word, through other believers, through the Holy Spirit’s voice in our hearts. But some days, we have to dig to know more about Him. Then other days He just throws a tidbit of wisdom up on the shore for us to pick up.
No matter how He teaches you and me, we not only need to take it in, we need to do what it says. There are treasures for me at the beach. In the water, on the shore, and in His Word. They are there for you as well, at the beach, in the mountains, or in your “closet” at home. Just look around, see His vastness and pick up the treasure of knowledge He speaks to you day after day. Then do what He says.
