A Passion for the Impossible

Sometimes I find myself in a comfortable place, not looking for a new thing, or a challenge that would move me out of that rut. After a while, I become comfortable with with my rut to the point of feeling stagnant. Then I find myself seeking a challenge to show me new steps to take, or new things to learn.

Perhaps that’s where the disciples were as they were going out to share the Gospel, heal the sick, and perform miracles in the name of Jesus.

When they failed to drive out a demon from a possessed boy, they asked Jesus why. His response was:

“Because of your little faith,” he told them. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20

Seems that if they wanted to do great things for the Lord, they still had something to learn. Perhaps miracles had become mundane for the disciples, normal every day stuff. Jesus wanted them to attempt the impossible, the things that could only be accomplished in God’s power.

William Booth once said, God loves with a great love the man whose heart is bursting with a passion for the IMPOSSIBLE.

I wonder how often I pray for the impossible, truly believing God’s power can bring it about. Henry Blackaby, author of Experiencing God, taught that God wants us accept His assigned God-sized tasks that can only be achieved through His power. They aren’t “God-sized” if we can accomplish them in our own power.

Are those tasks hard? Challenging? Scary? Yes, yes, yes! But when we watch God do it as we take steps of faith, we get to see Him do the impossible.
