A Lesson Relearned: When Doubt Creeps In

You’d think I would know by now. I’ve been there and done that so many times. I know better. Sometimes I forget. I wonder if you do the same thing.

Has God asked you to do something lately that felt like a challenge—something for which you felt less than adequate? Did you ask the Lord for the ability to walk through it? Or did you ask Him, and then allow your weaknesses—or the lies of the enemy—to stifle you?

Jeremiah faced a moment like that. While Jerusalem was under siege by Babylon, God gave him a prophecy. The message pointed to better days ahead and even hinted at the new covenant that would one day come through Jesus.

Yet the situation looked hopeless. Everything around Jeremiah said the promise was impossible. Still, he declared, “Oh, Lord GOD! You yourself made the heavens and the earth by your great power and with your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for you!”

But almost immediately, Jeremiah begins reminding God about the siege on Jerusalem. Doubt crept in, and he couldn’t see how anything good could come from such devastation.

Then the Lord gently reminded Jeremiah of what he had just said:“Look, I am the LORD, the God over every creature. Is anything too difficult for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27).

I truly do believe God can do anything. I really do. Yet, like Jeremiah, I sometimes allow fear and doubt to rise up. I listen to the enemy instead of trusting the One who called me.

As we walk in obedience, the assignment is often far bigger than we are. Instead of doubting, we must remind ourselves it’s not about us. It’s about God and His work in and through us. We must walk in His strength and wisdom, not our own.

When we do, we begin to see Him accomplish what we never could. We are reminded that He did it—not us. That’s how He receives all the glory. Our role, as the old hymn says, is simply to trust and obey.

Whatever you may be facing right now the Lord has allowed it, and He will walk with you through it. He will give you the strength and courage needed to accomplish His work through you.

Then you too will be able to say with confidence:“Nothing is too hard for God.”
