Don’t Laugh When God Speaks

Why did Sarah laugh? Was it because she was too old to have a baby? Because she didn’t believe what she was told? Because it felt impossible?

In Genesis 18, the Lord visited Abraham in the form of three men—understood to be the Lord and two angels. Abraham recognized who they were.

After serving them a home-cooked meal, they told Abraham that Sarah would become pregnant and have a son—the child through whom a great nation would come. From inside her tent, Sarah listened to this promise and laughed to herself.

In Genesis 18:14, the Lord, in response to Sarah’s unbelief, said to Abraham, “Is anything impossible for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, and in about a year she will have a son.”

If you know the story, you know that is exactly what happened. Isaac was born to Sarah miraculously in her old age—just as God had said.

Can you relate? When have you quietly laughed at something God seemed to be speaking into your life because it felt too far-fetched? Did you dismiss it, or did you ask Him to show you how it could be?

Much of Scripture can seem impossible—until we remember who God is. He is not limited by what limits us. Our doubts can keep us stuck, even in despair. And while God’s ways often look very different from what we expect, as we walk with Him day by day, we begin to see His plans unfold—often in the very places that once seemed impossible.

One day, we may understand more clearly what God was doing. Or perhaps, when we see Jesus, those questions simply won’t matter. What we will know—without question—is that He has been faithful every single time.

What is your story of “impossibility”? Who needs to hear it? Ask the Lord to lead you to someone who needs the reminder that our God is completely trustworthy.
