Beyond Better: A New Creation
We’re constantly bombarded with messages about self-improvement: better health, a better job, better relationships, a better home. But when is “better” ever enough?
Perhaps we’re looking at it the wrong way. The Christian journey isn’t about becoming “better” versions of ourselves; it’s about becoming something entirely new.
Romans 6:4 says, “We were buried with him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
This new life isn’t something we earn. Jesus doesn’t improve us—He makes us new. As author Chris Tiegreen put it:

There’s nothing we can do to become perfect in God’s eyes. Only Jesus is perfect, and His death on the cross makes eternal life possible for us. But as we “die to self,” our relationship with Jesus deepens, and we naturally desire to follow Him more closely. This obedience doesn’t save us, but it is a powerful expression of our faith. It’s how our love and obedience can shine God’s light to the world and show others that we have been saved.
So instead of focusing on becoming “better,” let’s focus on the spiritual disciplines that help us become closer to Jesus each day, getting to know and love Him more.
Lord, show me how to die to self today and allow you to fill my life completely and walk as your new creation. Amen.
