Facing Your “What-Ifs”

Kay Arthur was one of the most influential Bible teachers of our time—especially for women. For years, she stood out as one of the few who not only taught Scripture deeply but also equipped women to study the Bible inductively for themselves. Her impact is still being felt, and with her recent passing, many are reflecting on how her teaching shaped their spiritual journeys.

One of Kay’s most memorable quotes has stayed with me:

Wise words—but easier said than done, right? I’d hate to count how many times a day I worry first and then remember that the Lord is with me and promises to meet my needs.

Still, there have been a few times I’ve actually applied her wisdom. I remember the first time I got a callback after a routine x-ray. My thoughts spiraled: Wait, did I hear that right? What if something’s wrong?

But it was a particularly busy season of life, and I made a conscious choice: “This might be nothing. I simply don’t have time to waste energy on worry until I know more. I’ll deal with it when and if there’s something to deal with.”

After follow-up x-rays, I was given the all clear. No issue at all. What a powerful lesson: worry would have robbed me of peace for no reason.

It’s okay to tell the Lord you are worried, afraid, or angry. He understands!

When concern threatens to take over, I go back to Philippians:

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! … Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God … will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7

I actually wrote about this back in January under the title Thieves of Peace (January 26)—and I needed the reminder again. Maybe you do too. I’m choosing not to worry unless there’s a real issue. I’m praying to wait in peace, and to walk in faith, no matter the outcome.
