The Challenge of a Complaint-Free Life

Complaining is the absolute worst possible thing you could do for your health. The worst!… For the next 7 days, I challenge you not to complain at all.

Every time I read that quote from T. Harv Eker, I feel a pang of conviction. I wish I’d never read it! He challenges us to go seven days without a single complaint. It sounds so simple, yet why is it so incredibly hard?

The Apostle Paul gives us a powerful reminder in Philippians 2.

Do everything without grumbling and arguing, so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world. Philippians 2:14-15

Just a few verses before, he offers the secret to this challenge:

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Philippians 4:3-4

Paul explains how Christ humbled himself and poured out his life for others.

So, he tells us to do everything without grumbling and arguing. And to do nothing out of selfish ambition and conceit. The lesson is clear: Stop complaining by shifting your focus. Instead of getting wrapped up in our own desires, we’re called to serve and consider others.

So, are you up for Eker’s challenge? But let’s try anyway. Can you take a step toward shining like a star in a grumbling world? I’m afraid I’ll fail, but let’s at least try. Let’s work to get our focus off ourselves and onto the needs of others.

Lord, help us stop complaining so we can shine like stars in your world—even when everyone around us is grumbling. Help us consider others’ needs and get our focus off self!
